Chapter 3, B: Silhouette

You've decided to stay quiet.

The weapon felt cold against Deaf's hand as he stared down with a racing mind. It glinted silver as the damp air adorned its metal surface, like the key to their escape. "It can be so easy." His brittle voice echoed amongst the fog.

Minx smiled. "Yes."

Deaf looked up, he saw the haze in her eyes as corrupted as the mist in this ghost town.

"No."

~*~*~*~

The two sat in agitating silence as they helplessly watched their visibility range getting slimmer and slimmer. Shadows began to merge against the thick air and they found themselves to be in more fear of the missing silhouettes than seeing it.

Russ tapped at the steering wheel impatiently, and Cry drew little, familiar figures on the dew-ridden window.

"What's taking them so long?" Russ fell back into his seat and ruffled his dark hair anxiously. Cry watched him sigh, and rubbed out his little sketches with his bandaged wrist. Russ sat up once more. "It's been 15 minutes. We agreed on an hour."

Cry coughed and leant, back against the window. "Relax, they might just have a larger place to check out or something."

Russ snorted, unconvinced.

"Don't worry about it." His companion smiled.

"I'm not." Russ looked back at his friend with blue eyes that contradicted his very claim. "It's just Deaf's... condition."

Cry gazed back. The thick fog could not veil his concerned expression, and he read his thoughts like a book. When Russ' eyes met his again, Cry sat up and unlocked the car door. "Shall we go look for them?"

Russ observed his friend, then shook his head as he turned away to hide a little smile. "Let's." He responded quietly as the two stepped out into the slowly darkening labyrinth. They stood side by side in silence as they tried to work out a route.

The streets were now beginning to grow restless with groans and hisses of walkers, slowly drowning out their thought. "Neither of them 's come back yet." Cry squinted, trying to image the street that was consumed by the fog.

"No." Russ replied. "Should we go find Deaf first?"

Cry blinked at the man. "I thought you wanted to give them some time."

"I did." He took off his glasses, and wiped the moisture off with his shirt before putting it back. It made little change. "And he's had plenty time."

They made their way down the street, with their vision limited to the mere few blocks in front of them. From time to time, they'd come too close a call to a zombie. But the damp air somewhat coated their scent and being well enough to fool the walkers.

Cry followed in Russ' footsteps mechanically with a hanging head. He felt as it the energy was being drained out of him, and the mist slowly devouring his being only added to that hypnotizing, dream-like sensation. He closed his eyes for one second, but was immediately pulled back by the reality.

"CRY!!"

A walker had found him amidst the hazy maze. It turned its head, and growled menacingly as it locked Cry in its vision, and limped over with surprising speed. Russ rocked awake his friend, and the two ran for it. "Here!" Russ handed him a gun while he cocked his, and shot the walker who now finally lay dead on the street.

The gunfire only attracted more, and they slowly found themselves pushed in one direction on this narrow street. Shadows began to appear on the blank canvas of the fog in an alarming rate, and charged at the duo with even more eagerness. "Let's just keep backing up. They should be at the end of this street." Russ shouted over the gun shots.

"If not, we can run for it." Cry offered an alternate route. "We can lose them easily in this fog."

Russ nodded.

As they moved further down the street, the wave of zombies following them slowly began to die down, and was eventually lost again in the greedy jaws of the thick fog. Their trembling hands held tight onto their weapons still, cautious as ever.

Cry stopped in his path, and Russ turned to face the man. They stood in silence as a distant cry up ahead caught their attention. "You hear that?" He asked, Russ nodded in confirmation.

They slowly approached the voice, finding their way through the weather relying purely on sound. A pair of silhouettes kneeling on the floor finally came into view. Russ squinted, then let out a short, relived sigh as Deaf and Minx's features came into view. They waved at them quietly in fear of attracting unwanted guests.

Deaf noticed the two and raised his head to greet them, Minx was crying in his arms. They exchanged knowing looks, and Russ knew it was all okay.

But Cry thought differently, he watched in frozen panic as a silhouette appeared, and towered over the two. As the shadow reached out, Cry fired a hasty shot at the creature's arm, knocking it down. It fell onto the concrete ground, making pained noises.

Two more figures followed, and presented themselves before the duo. It was Ken and Marzia.

"Felix!!"

Cry froze in shock.

Marzia got to her knees, and helped up the shadow he'd shot in haste. Clenching his bleeding right arm and whimpering like a shot buck, Pewdie got up uneasily with help.

"Oh my god..." Quiet curses slipped out from Cry's mouth as he dropped his weapon in disgust and clawed his scalp, his heart heavy with horrifying guilt. "Pewds I..."

Russ and Ken helped the man up, he looked up from an arched back, and smiled at Cry between shaky breaths. "Don't... Worry about it, Cry."

Blood trickled down his wound.

Cry rushed over to examine it, Pewdie flinched violently away from his hand. "OW!!" He hissed, then apologized upon seeing Cry's hurt eyes. "J-Just leave it."

"You really shouldn't." Deaf got up with Minx, and stared at his arm with the same worried expression. "It's best if we treat it soon. There's a hospital just behind here."

"Hospital?" Ken repeated dramatically. "Really? That place must be RIDDEN with zombies. We need a safer base."

Russ nodded. "He has a point."

"I'm fine, really." Pewdie laughed nervously as he trembled under the pain. Marzia ripped off a strip of cloth from her skirt, and tried to bandage him up. "Once the pain numbs, I'll be good to go."

Marzia looked up suspisciously. "But you're right-handed..."

"Everett Park is up north." Ken continued, he walked over to stand next to Russ and drew their route on his damp map. "It's up a hill, there are not many walkers and a lot of free accommodations. Only problem being..."

"No food?"

"Nothing. Zero resources."

"There's a Restaurant at the promenade. They'll have warmth and food." Cry suggested. "It's also near a bridge in case we need an emergency escape."

Ken scratched his beard. "But that's near a promenade. People are often around promenades."

Deaf insisted. "We need health."

"If we set this as our safe base." Russ drew a circle around Everett Park. "We can come out whenever to gather resources. Though this might lengthen our stay here..."

"And we want to get out of here." Minx said. "As fast as fucking possible."

Pewdie thanked Marzia for the help, then turned to join the group discussion. "Why don't we just leave now?" He said. "We can stay in the next town or something."

The image of the snapped cables and traffic on the bridge lashed at Cry's mind. He took a deep breath. "That might not be a good idea..."

"Could be worth a shot." Russ argued.

As the talking died down and everyone was silent with thought, Cry turned to Pewdie.

"Pewds..."

Five pairs of silent eyes now rested on his decision.

I say B cause food and supplies. Even though there might be walkers, they have weapons.
